Quantifying relations between altered hydrology and fish community responses for streams in Minnesota

چکیده

Abstract Background Altered hydrology is a stressor on aquatic life, but quantitative relations between specific aspects of streamflow alteration and biological responses have not been developed statewide scale in Minnesota. Best subsets regression analysis was used to develop linear models that quantify among five categories hydrologic metrics (i.e., duration, frequency, magnitude, rate-of-change, timing) computed from streamgage records six composition, habitat, life history, reproductive, tolerance, trophic) fish-community samples, as well fish-based indices biotic integrity (FIBI) scores FIBI normalized an impairment threshold the corresponding stream class (FIBI_BCG4). Relations fish community were examined using three datasets represented periods record, long-term changes, short-term changes flow regimes streams Results Regression demonstrated significant explanatory response metrics, with strongest explained over 70% variability metric variables. Tolerance-based metrics. The most commonly related bankfull flows variability. Conclusions Final represent paired samples throughout State Minnesota encompass differences orders, landscape units, watershed sizes. Presented methods can support evaluations communities facilitate targeted efforts improve health communities. Methods also be applied locations outside continuous data samples.

Influence of Stream channel morphology and in-stream habitats on fish community in Golestan province Streams

Four streams with different sizes were selected for studying the effects of environmental factors on fish assemblages using indirect (Detrended Correspondence Analysis, DCA) and direct (Redundancy Analysis, RDA) gradient analysis in Golestan province. DCA of presence-absence and relative abundance data showed well gradient and linear model of species variability. In the within-site RDA, environ...

Relations between retired agricultural land, water quality, and aquatic-community health, Minnesota River Basin.

The relative importance of agricultural land retirement on water quality and aquatic-community health was investigated in the Minnesota River Basin. Eighty-two sites, with drainage areas ranging from 4.3 to 2200 km, were examined for nutrient concentrations, measures of aquatic-community health (e.g., fish index of biotic integrity [IBI] scores), and environmental factors (e.g., drainage area a...

Responses in Fish Community Structure to Restoration of Two Indiana Streams

—Stream restoration has accelerated in the Midwestern United States during the past decade, but the effects of restoration on stream biota are rarely evaluated. From 1997 to 2000, we studied the responses in fish communities to the attempted restoration of two channelized streams (Juday Creek and Potato Creek) in northwestern Indiana, each of which received two new meanders to a 1-km reach of s...

Avian Community Responses to Variability in River Hydrology

River flow is a major driver of morphological structure and community dynamics in riverine-floodplain ecosystems. Flow influences in-stream communities through changes in water velocity, depth, temperature, turbidity and nutrient fluxes, and perturbations in the organisation of lower trophic levels are cascaded through the food web, resulting in shifts in food availability for consumer species....

Quantifying heterogeneous responses of fish community size structure using novel combined statistical techniques

To understand changes in ecosystems, the appropriate scale at which to study them must be determined. Large marine ecosystems (LMEs) cover thousands of square kilometres and are a useful classification scheme for ecosystem monitoring and assessment. However, averaging across LMEs may obscure intricate dynamics within. The purpose of this study is to mathematically determine local and regional p...
